Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Aromas of strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, and cassis, with flavors of dark raspberries and cherries, and a long, peppery finish.
Vineyard Notes
Cardiac Hill was planted in 1995, and is composed of Pommard and Dijon 115 clones on grafted rootstock with higher vine density (1,088 vines/acre) than in the main part of the vineyard (871 vines/acre). Planted on a steep south facing slope with Willakenzie soils, the vines on this hillside struggled initially. The young vines were stressed for water and nutrients due to the dense clay loam. However, Trudy and Keith recognized early that the fruit from this block was distinctive. In 2005, ten years after the block was originally planted, the vines matured enough to produce a crop for the first bottling of Pinot Noir Cardiac Hill.
Winemaker Notes
The grapes were harvested by hand, destemmed, and underwent a 5-day cold soak. After fermentation began, the vat was pumped over and punched down twice daily until dry, then pressed. The wine settled overnight, then was racked to 25% new French oak barrels and aged for 18 months until bottling.
